Salal

Overview

Salal, or Gaultheria shallon, is an evergreen shrub indigenous to western North America. Thriving in USDA zones 7-9, it reaches 3-5 feet tall and spreads up to 6 feet. Salal flaunts leathery leaves and pink-tinged white blooms in spring, followed by edible, dark purple berries. It prefers partial shade to full sun and well-drained soil, offering low-maintenance ground cover and year-round foliage for naturalistic landscapes.
